NL Review!! Is Young Jonn’s EP, “Love Is Not Enough” Worth Listening To?

Young Jonn has been swimming in these waters; he did his thing, made a name for himself, and—with the looks of things—made some money too.

Point is, Young Jonn has been here long enough to understand the industry and to know what he’s doing. So when it wasn’t enough for him to just own songs and have artists sing on his beats, he has decided to channel his inner Wizkid and start voicing.

A pop producer who understands what a hit is—having made so many in his decade-and-half long career that started as a YBNL affiliate—, I think someone like Young Jonn can be trusted to know what formula to use if he wanted to create a record people would care about.

He featured on Lil Kesh’s “Ecstasy” EP in 2020 and had since dropped a single and an EP of his own. The relatively new EP is called “Love Is Not Enough” and has only four tracks on it. Young Jonn, singing, how bad can it be? Well, let’s find out.

“Love Is Not Enough” EP

The five-track EP is an instantly likable project with the right things in the right places and the right amounts.

He begins with “32,” a hardcore afro track on which he opened up his raw voice by sticking to speaking the dialects (Yoruba and pidgin) he understands well. No big English, no complex sentences, just a repetition of catchy, free-flowing lyrics.

“Dada,” the second track has almost the same style, except this is not hardcore afro as it has an uptempo instrumental that has elements of dancehall woven into the DNA of the predominantly afro track.

I guess what I’m trying to say is “Dada” is a bop, and that’s why he’s promoting it as a single right now. The song reminds us Young Jonn is the mind behind those Lil Kesh bops from back in the day.

“Just Friends” had Young Jonn talking and singing like any of the new school guys would. He had everything, a verse, a chorus, an interlude, a catchy adlib, and it’s short enough to be put on repeat.

“Next To You” saw him go that dancehall way all the way. The instrumental has amapiano elements fused with fast-tempoed percussions that show Young Jonn’s versatility with the instruments more than anything. The featured act, Vedo, contributed brilliantly too.

“Normally” is a proper Kizz Daniel track that showed Young Jonn’s inherent weakness; the ability to pitch high. The song would’ve been on the level of some of Kizz Daniel‘s top hits if Jonn could’ve gone lower with his voice. Anyway, it’s still a good song in its own right, but it felt like it wasn’t his song.

Overall, the EP is a madness. Four out of five tracks are bangers, and even the fifth one is good in its own right. That’s gotta be something. For an introductory track, Young Jonn may have outdone himself.
