The brain must interpret sexual experiences as enjoyable in order for sex to feel pleasurable.
Nerves in the body’s genital areas send unique signals to the brain, which the brain interprets to produce various sexual sensations.
Chemical messengers called neurotransmitters let the brain connect with other parts of the body. In sexual pleasure, several neurotransmitters are involved: Prolactin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Norepinephrine which dilates and constricts blood vessels, making the genitals more sensitive. The body releases this during sexual stimulation.
There is no “proper” or “appropriate” way to feel about sex or to have sex. Sexual pleasure can be derived from a variety of postures, styles of intercourse, and sexual fantasies.
Sexual enjoyment and stigma can be enhanced by open communication, self-acceptance, and a willingness to seek help when something isn’t working.
