  • HAPPY BITCOIN PIZZA DAY: The Reason Why The World Marks Bitcoin Pizza Day On May 22 Every Year (A MUST READ)
  • Every year on May 22, the entire crypto community comes together to commemorate the first physical bitcoin transaction on a day dubbed Bitcoin Pizza Day.

This day commemorates the first Bitcoin transaction, in which a crypto miner from Florida, United States, used the cryptocurrency to pay for two pizzas. What’s more remarkable is that he paid 10,000 Bitcoins for the two pizzas, which is now worth over $80 million.

Laszlo Hanyecz agreed to pay 10,000 Bitcoins for two delivered Papa John’s pizzas on May 22, 2010, just over a year after the bitcoin blockchain went online. Back then, it was somewhat simple to obtain bitcoins; each successful miner was awarded with 50 BTC for discovering a new block. This meant that mining 200 blocks would yield you 10,000 BTC.

Organized on bitcointalk forum, Laszlo Hanyecz reached out with an advertisement to buy from anyone who would cook the pizza or order the pizza and deliver to him.

“I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day,” Hanyecz wrote.

“I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I’m aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don’t have to order or prepare it myself…”

In exchange for the 10,000 Bitcoins, a British man accepted Hanyecz’s offer and purchased the two pizzas for him.

“I just want to report that I successfully traded 10,000 bitcoins for pizza.” – Jercos

The pizzas were prepared by Papa John’s, but Hanyecz purchased them from Jeremy Sturdivant (username “jercos”), a 19-year-old.

Hanyeczs’ pizzas have undoubtedly become more and more expensive since the advent of Bitcoin. Hanyecz might have profited about $690 million if he had sold his entire stock at bitcoin’s all-time high of $68, 990 — enough to buy 46 million big Papa John’s pizzas at $15 each.

The 10,000 bitcoins would be worth at least $291 million at the current bitcoin price of $29 160.49. At the very least, he helped to launch bitcoin by purchasing the first real-world commodity with it.
